Russia-Ukraine war: Putin’s forces drop 100 deadly glide bombs and dozens of drones along the front line

Selenskyj: China is trying to undermine the Ukraine peace summit

Over the past day, Vladimir Putin’s troops have fired around 100 deadly glide bombs and dozens of drones across the border with Ukraine.

According to the Ukrainian army, Russia fired 96 glide bombs, two rocket attacks, 4,000 grenades and 44 kamikaze drones in the last 24 hours.

A glide bomb is a standard air-dropped bomb that has been modified to be fired from a greater distance rather than directly over the target. Some bombs weigh up to 1.5 tons.

Previously, the former Russian defense minister and a leading general had been issued arrest warrants by an international court for carrying out attacks on civilian targets in Ukraine that amounted to war crimes.

Former Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and General Valery Gerasimov are suspected of war crimes and crimes against humanity for ordering attacks on civilians and civilian objects in Ukraine, the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague said.

The judges concluded that there were “sufficient grounds to believe that the two suspects were responsible for the missile attacks by Russian forces on Ukrainian electricity infrastructure from October 10, 2022 to at least March 9, 2023,” the ICC said.

Russian Navy missile cruiser conducts exercises in the Mediterranean

The Russian missile cruiser Varyag conducted exercises in the Mediterranean, the state news agency TASS reported on Thursday, citing the naval command.

The focus of the exercises was on defending against a mass attack with drones from the sea, the naval command said.

It also included simulated battles with an enemy ship and a submarine.

Earlier this month, a Russian frigate conducted submarine search exercises in the Atlantic en route to Cuba.

China firmly rejects EU sanctions against its companies because of Russia ties

China strongly opposes the inclusion of some Chinese companies in the European Union’s 14th package of sanctions against Russia, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce said on Wednesday.

The move would have a negative impact on economic and trade relations between China and the EU, the ministry said, calling on the Union to “unconditionally” lift sanctions against Chinese companies.

EU countries agree on sanctions against Belarus to close ‘biggest gap’ in Russian measures

The countries of the European Union agreed on a package of sanctions against Belarus on Wednesday, EU diplomats and Belgium said, in an attempt to block a way to circumvent the restrictions against Russia.

The EU adopted its 14th sanctions package this week to punish Russia for the large-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. The package also includes clauses that increase the responsibility of EU companies exporting via non-EU countries.

“This package will strengthen our actions in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, including the fight against sanctions evasion,” Belgium, which holds the EU Council Presidency until the end of June, said at X.
