Names of Brooklyn Park officer and man he shot during investigation into infant’s death released

New details have been released about an incident over the weekend in Brooklyn Park in which officers shot and killed a man while investigating the death of a toddler.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) identified the Brooklyn Park police officer who fired his weapon as Momodou Dibba, who has three months of police experience. Officials say Dibba is on critical incident leave.

According to the preliminary investigation, officers were called to a home in Brooklyn Park shortly before 4 a.m. because a baby was not breathing. When they arrived, they found a toddler in critical condition who later died at HCMC.

Authorities said the infant’s father, 24-year-old Oronde Neal Reese, was not home and appeared “distraught” after learning of his son’s death.

While officers were investigating, Reese went back into the house and locked himself in his bedroom. Another resident broke down the door and went with officers into the room, where they found Reese in the closet. He told officers he had a gun.

According to BCA, a scuffle ensued during which Dibba fired his weapon, striking Reese. Officers provided medical attention until Reese was transported to North Memorial, where he remains in stable condition.

BCA officers recovered a handgun and bullet casings at the scene. Agents are also reviewing body camera video of the incident.

Once the investigation is complete, the BCA will submit its findings to the Hennepin County District Attorney’s Office for review. The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office is also investigating the infant’s death.
