Why the Gunners are replacing the club crest with a cannon
Arsenal will play with the iconic cannon on all three shirts next season rather than the club crest.
The club had previously used the cannon instead of the crest, for example on last season’s away jersey.
However, next season the cannon will appear on all three Arsenal shirts for the first time.
The club crest will remain an important part of Arsenal FC’s iconography and will continue to feature regularly, including on the artwork that adorned the Emirates Stadium last season.
The Arsenal has a rich history of previous coats of arms, including the 1930s Art Deco coat of arms that hangs above the entrance to Highbury’s Marble Halls.
With this equipment, the club wants to honour the cultural references of Arsenal fans as well as their history and tradition.
Arsenal are not the first club to use an alternative to their crest on their shirts. Manchester United’s away shirt this season features a symbol of the Red Devil as a nod to the club’s mascot. Liverpool wear the Liver Bird on their shirts instead of their crest.
Arsenal’s current crest, which appears on their home shirt this season, has been in use since 2002.
The last time Arsenal had a home shirt that used a cannon instead of the club crest was in the 1989/90 season.
The emblem was used on this season’s third shirt as well as on last season’s black away shirt, both designs proving very popular with the fan base.
