Two art markets in Lawrence, taking place throughout Saturday, aim to promote artists from the community.

Community organizer and artist Moniquè Mercurio, Ohlone Costanoan Esselen Nation, partnered with Haskell Indian Nations University to bring more local artists to this month’s Haskell Open Market. She hoped it could be a space for former artists from the Art Love Collective, which Haskell organizers welcomed, Mercurio wrote in her Facebook post about the event.

The Art Love Collective recently closed its doors at 646 Vermont St. About 40 artists who were part of the collective, many of whom sold their original works from there, were forced to close their doors.

Mercurio plans to be at the market with her beading business, MercTribe Designs, along with several other artists and artisans. People can also purchase food from Peaches’ Frybread.

The Haskell Open Market will be held on Saturday, June 29, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Haskell’s Tommaney Library, 2500 Creek Ave. Admission is free.

The market was originally scheduled to be held outdoors in the parking lot of the Haskell Cultural Center and Museum, but Mercurio said it was moved indoors to avoid the summer heat.

Artists interested in the free sale can register online using a Google form. Tables and chairs will be provided to vendors. Questions can be emailed to [email protected].

LOLA Pride Party and Art Market

LOLA, Lovers of Lawrence Art, presents its first pop-up event to celebrate Pride Month.

The party and market will feature 16 local queer artists selling Pride-themed artwork and merchandise. One of those artists is Sam Azzaro, Mx of Bizzarre, formerly of ALC.

Deja Brooks, former Miss Gay Kansas, will host a Pride storytime for all ages, and other local drag performers will provide music to accompany the celebration.

The Pride Pop-Up Party will be held on Saturday, June 29th from 3-7 p.m. at Maceli’s, 1031 New Hampshire St. in downtown Lawrence. Admission is free.

Refreshments can be purchased.

View artist portraits and stay updated on the event on LOLA’s Instagram page, @lolalawrence.
