Press Club statement on the first day of Evan Gershkovich’s trial in Russia

WASHINGTON, 26 June 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Below you will find a statement from Emily WilkinsPresident of the National Press Club on the first day of the trial of the Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich in Yekaterinburg, Russia.

“The first day of Evans’ trial took place behind closed doors. Even the observers from the US consulate had to leave the courtroom – a first sign of the unfair sham trial that lies ahead.

“We understand that Evan is wrongfully convicted, because all defendants in such trials in Russia be convicted. No actual evidence will be presented because there is no evidence. This trial will be anything but fair.

“Evan was fully accredited for Russia and reported for the Wall Street Journal. This fact is ignored in Yekaterinburg, where they pretend Evan reported for the government – a ridiculous accusation without any basis.

“We remain concerned for Evan’s safety and there are no details on where he will be held during the trial and whether he will still be able to send and receive letters from his family. Our biggest question remains: How soon do we get Evan home? We see that his next trial date is now set for August 13.”
