Announcement of an eight-part HBO series “Green Lantern”

DC Studios is expanding its universe with the Lantern Corps. Green Lantern has been given a series order by HBO. The eight-part drama will be directed by Ozarks showrunner Chris Mundy alongside Damon Lindelof.

Based on the original Green Lantern characters, the series particularly highlights DC Comics’ John Stewart and Hal Jordan. The greenlight for the series comes five years after HBO Max developed a Green Lantern series with producer Greg Berlanti – the man behind Arrow-verse on The CW and one of the writers of the 2011 film starring Ryan Reynolds. In early 2023, DC Studios canceled Berlanti’s Green Lantern show. At the time, Peter Safran said: “Greg’s vision was more of a space opera that he wanted to do. Our vision is more True Detectivemore of a terrestrial investigation story. We have all agreed to go our separate ways.” Gunn and Safran said in a statement about the new series: “We are excited to bring this groundbreaking DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon and Tom at the helm. John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and Lanterns brings them to life in an original detective story that is a fundamental part of the unified DCU that we will see next summer with Superman.”
