HUDSON VALLEY, NY — Severe storms with high winds swept through the Hudson Valley Wednesday evening, causing severe damage throughout the region.

“One of our police officers was responding to a hit-and-run accident in Congers when his police car was struck by a large tree. The officer was not injured, but the car sustained significant damage,” Clarkstown City Councilman George Hoehmann reported on Facebook.

There were widespread power outages. As of 10:30 p.m.:

  • Central Hudson: 12,771 customers in Dutchess were without power; 10,317 in Orange; 695 in Putnam; 4,567 in Ulster
  • O&R: 9,203 in Rockland; 5,872 in Orange
  • NYSEG: 6,363 in Dutchess; 1,157 in orange; 1,318 at Putnam; 3,922 in Westchester
  • Con Ed: 911 in Westchester

Because of the damage, roads had to be closed throughout the region. “Please stay off the roads and avoid fallen cables,” said Hoehmann.

As utility and construction crews continue to respond to emergencies and power outages, residents are reminded to stay at least 30 feet away from downed power lines. Remember that power lines can become tangled and hidden in fallen trees. Consider all downed lines as live lines.
