Subway Series postponed due to severe thunderstorm at Citi Field

Subway Series postponed due to severe thunderstorm at Citi Field

There’s rain, there’s a cloudburst, and then there’s the kind of rain and cloudburst that caused a delay in the Yankees-Mets game at Citi Field on Wednesday night.

With one out in the fifth inning and a pitch after Tyrone Taylor’s at-bat, a downpour and thunderstorm began, prompting the umpires to immediately stop play – the Mets were leading 4-0 in Game 2 of the Subway Series – and allow the tarp to be pulled onto the field.

They didn’t even try to continue playing despite the storm once it started.

During the worst of the rainstorm, it was difficult to see the giant scoreboard in center field and the area in front of it from the stands behind home base.

Fans ran behind the stands for cover, and eventually security guards marched down the left touchline to make sure two fans still standing at the edge of the wall didn’t think about jumping into the sand.

The outfield area guarded by Alex Verdugo and Brandon Nimmo became a beautiful lake.

Although the rain stopped after 15 to 20 minutes, ground staff did not begin removing the tarpaulin until 9:29 p.m. – just minutes after fans were allowed to return to their seats.

The puddle in left field had mostly disappeared from the grass, but the other areas of soil exposed to the precipitation were still soaked.

The Mets extended their lead thanks to Francisco Alvarez’s three RBIs – a two-run homer and an RBI double – and Sean Manaea’s five scoreless innings in which he silenced the Yankees’ offense and allowed just two hits.
