Emma Roberts wants to share some thoughts on her fellow Nepo Baby stars – especially George Clooney, who, like Emma Roberts, also has a famous aunt.

Roberts falls into the category of “Nepo baby” – an internet term that refers to famous people who also have famous relatives – because her father is actor Eric Roberts and her aunt is actress Julia Roberts.

However, she argues that older male actors are not referred to as “Nepo babies” as often as young actresses. In particular, she was referring to George Clooney, whose aunt Rosemary Clooney was a famous singer and actress in the 1950s. She famously played the lead role in the 1954 classic white Christmas alongside Bing Crosby. In the music world she is known for songs like “Come On-a My House” and “Mambo Italiano”.

“Everyone loves overnight success stories like that. And unless you’re the girl from nowhere who makes it in Hollywood, you roll your eyes and think, ‘Well, your dad was like that.’ And I always joke and say, ‘Why doesn’t anyone tell George Clooney he’s a Nepo baby? Rosemary Clooney was an icon,'” Roberts said.

“But I also think that young girls have a harder time with the Nepo baby thing. I don’t really see people criticizing the sons of famous actors, but that shouldn’t be their fault either.”

She continued, “I think there are two sides to the coin… People like to say that you have an advantage because you have family in the industry. But the other side of that is that you have more to prove. And if people maybe haven’t had good experiences with other people in your family, then you’re never going to get a chance.”

When Roberts looks back on her childhood, she says her aunt’s fame was overwhelming.

“I saw first hand what that really looks like with my Aunt Julia,” she said. “It’s fun and it’s great, but there’s a part of it that’s really scary. And so I always kind of wanted to forge my own path… Fame was never the goal, because fame at a certain level is kind of scary.”

“Even in my late teens, I never wanted my fame to outweigh my work,” she added. “Because nothing scares me more than being so famous that you’re never left alone, but you also can’t get good jobs. And that’s what I think happened to a lot of people when I was in my teens and early 20s. And that really scared me, and that’s why I never wanted that to happen to me.”
