Video premiere: Devarrow – Likewise (Song of the Day)

Our song of the day comes from the Canadian singer-songwriter Devarrow with his new single Also. The single is released today and marks the beginning of a series of singles leading up to his upcoming album, Heart-shaped stonevia Paper Bag Records. They say once a song is written, it can take on a life of its own and decide its own fate. That could be the case with Likewise, a song written during an artist residency at the Banff Centre for the Arts in 2019; it has gone through a number of iterations to make its way into the present with a completely transformative momentum.

According to the press, the song’s initially compelling outro made such a dramatic impression on Devarrow that he reworked it into the song’s catchy chorus, creating a bouncy, rousing anthem. If you ever wanted proof that a song should never be rushed, look no further. Devarrow clearly knows a thing or two about melodic brevity, because Also is a song you want to lose yourself in. Summer is all about it.

We have the pleasure of presenting the accompanying video, directed by Riley Lamarche and starring Gavin Cameron. Like the melody, the video’s somber mood contrasts with the song’s clear joy and energy, highlighting the brilliant melodic tension. They’ve done a really good job of it.
