Youth of the Year reflects on the impact of the Boys and Girls Club

MOBILE, Alabama (WKRG) — The Boys and Girls Club is committed to empowering youth nationwide. Here in South Alabama, the nonprofit organization offers children the opportunity to learn life and career skills while having fun.

Ryan Mosley has been a member of the Bernard Malkove Boys and Girls Club for seven years. The once shy freshman has now been named Youth of the Year two years in a row.

In 2023, he was named Youth of the Year for the state of Alabama, and this year he was the regional winner.

This opportunity, Mosley says, has opened so many doors for his future.

“Connecting with people who are attending the college I’m going to, internship opportunities, the opportunity to meet people who could open the door to a particular career path I might want to pursue,” Mosley said.

Now he mentors younger children, teaching them professional and social skills and showing them the importance of volunteerism.

“I enjoy getting involved and staying active in my community,” Mosley said. “My community has given me so much and it is truly a blessing to be able to give back and share this opportunity with my time at the club.”

Thanks to the support of the local community, the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Alabama has served over 4,000 members ages 6 to 18.

Through its unique programs, the club helps to impact the lives of its young people and supports them individually in reaching their full potential.

“I think all of our programs that we do here, all of the activities that we do with the kids during the summer and throughout the school year, all go to a really good cause and help keep the kids involved in the club and help us retain the kids that have been there once,” Mosley said.
