26 June 2024- The Michigan High Speed ​​Internet Office launched its $13 million grant program, Michigan’s Network for Inclusive Training, Technology and Equitywhich aims to improve digital inclusion across the state, on Wednesday.

Applicants to the grant program can apply to serve as regional resource centers and host sites for the state’s regional digital coordinators, who address the specific needs of underrepresented, underfunded and underserved local areas. MIHI said these coordinators “will play a critical role in supporting the implementation of the Michigan Digital Equity Plan.”

The program is funded by the $2.75 billion Digital Equity portion of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021, which is administered by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration.

Director of Jobs and Economic Opportunity Susan Corbin said, “By providing the critical resources and skills our communities need to connect in meaningful ways, we are helping more Michiganders access the vital information, education and economic opportunities they need to succeed in our state.”

Applications are open until July 24 and represent the first step toward realizing MIHI’s goal of establishing regional resource centers in Michigan that Improving equal access to broadband services across the state. These centers will house digital navigators to help residents utilize critical digital resources.

Eligible applicants for this program include nonprofit organizations, socially anchored institutions, and partnerships between social organizations.

“Digital Navigators will help lead efforts on the ground and provide tailored support to ensure every person is represented and equipped with the resources and training needed to bridge the digital divide,” said Eric Friedrich, Chief Connectivity Officer for MIHI.

MITTEN will coordinate with digital navigators to work with local institutions and state agencies to improve broadband coverage. The initiative follows feedback gathered during MIHI’s 2023 Connected Future Listening Tour, where officials assessed issues such as internet availability and digital literacy in over 40 meetings with stakeholders across the state.
