Why Michigan residents are being urged to avoid Diamond Shruumz products

Following a nationwide outbreak of serious illness, state authorities are warning Michigan residents not to use Diamond Shruumz products.

Which products are affected?

Officials with the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services and the Food and Drug Administration said residents should not eat, sell or serve the brand’s Microdosing Candy Bars, Spice-Infused Wafers, Microdosing Gummy Bears or Macrodosing Gummy Bears.

The products contain a protected mushroom blend of Reishi and Lion’s Mane mushrooms.

Reported diseases

The FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have been investigating the products since June 7. So far, 26 illnesses have been reported in 16 states: Alabama, Arizona, California, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Tennessee.

Of the 26 people who have fallen ill so far, 16 have been hospitalized and 25 are receiving medical treatment, authorities said. No deaths have been reported.

Problem Description

Seizures, loss of consciousness, confusion, drowsiness, agitation, abnormal heartbeat, hypertension, hypotension, nausea and vomiting have been reported.

Where were these products purchased?

According to the FDA, Diamond Shruumz products can be purchased online as well as in smoking supply and vape stores and stores that sell hemp products such as cannabidiol or delta-8-tetrahydrocannabinol.

Authorities have not yet compiled a complete list of stores that sell Diamond Shruumz products, but advise against purchasing these products anywhere at this time.

What should one do?

If you own Diamond Shruumz products, you should throw them away.

Officials said the products may be of interest to children and teenagers, so parents should discuss this information with their children and ensure that these products are not present in their homes.

Retailers should stop selling and distributing these Diamond Shruumz products until a safe way to return or dispose of them is found.

Anyone who becomes ill from Diamond Shruumz products should call a doctor and the Poison Control Line at 1-800-222-1222.

Doctors who observe such illnesses should report them to their local health department or poison control center.

Investigation status

As of Tuesday, June 18, 2024, FDA officials had collected samples of Diamond Shruumz products for analysis.

Investigations are currently underway to determine the cause of the illness and determine further action.

FDA officials are in contact with the company regarding a possible voluntary recall.
