Ed’s Famous BBQ in Fall River closes as owners announce retirement

One of the area’s long-standing barbecue spots is saying goodbye to Fall River.

The owners of Ed’s Famous BBQ announced they have closed their Brayton Avenue business after 13 years as the couple begins the next chapter of their lives – retirement.

In a Facebook post on Wednesday, June 26, Ed Johnson and his wife Jody shared this bittersweet update and expressed their heartfelt gratitude to their loyal customers.

“We thank everyone who has supported us over the years by enjoying our BBQ. It has been a great pleasure serving you!” the post reads. “Having recently turned 67, it is time for us to move on to the next part of our lives.”

Ed’s Famous BBQ first opened its doors in early 2012 at 756 Brayton Ave. Ed Johnson brought with him his recipes for slow-cooked, smoky, dry-battered Southern-style barbecue that he had spent years perfecting at his former home in Chicago.

According to a 2012 Herald News article, Johnson came to Boston through a job at an educational company, but eventually decided to start his own culinary business in the Spindle City.

“I’ve pretty much always been in the business. It was a question of what business I was going to do next,” Johnson said in 2012, shortly after Ed’s Famous BBQ opened. “I thought my next business would be one where I would retire, and this seemed like a good one. I love feeding people and seeing how happy they are when they eat good food.”

Having spent most of his life in “barbecue paradise,” Johnson said he saw a niche in the region that he could fill for those seeking the taste of the South.

“People have been driving all over the place to satisfy their barbecue cravings, and they’re glad we’re here. I think Fall River is ready for barbecue,” Johnson said in 2012.

If you want to try Ed’s specialties such as ribs, pulled pork, chicken or beef brisket one last time, you’re unfortunately out of luck.

The restaurant has already quietly closed its doors. The last day of business was Father’s Day, according to the company’s Facebook page. A message from the Johnsons on the restaurant’s answering machine also informs callers of the closure.

“We apologize, many factors played a role in this decision, some of them were personal in nature,” says a Facebook comment from Ed’s BBQ.
