Bktherula emerges as a new voice in the trap landscape in 2024

Bktherula emerges as a new voice in the trap landscape in 2024

Bktherula, also known as Brooklyn Candida Rodriguez, started her career on SoundCloud. Her first tracks, “Lightweight” and “Faygo,” showed off her flow and trap direction, but it wasn’t until her following single that she gained true recognition.

“LEFT RIGHT” became a hit. The upbeat production, with pauses between claps and a circling, high-pitched synth, and the forever iconic line “Hoes on me, left and right” took Bktherula to a new level, all at the extremely young age of 16.

Bktherula’s SoundCloud success

Although she loved a booming bass in the background and clicking hi-hats, she wanted to develop vocally and expand her sound.

Her progressive discography

The singles from her debut album “Love Santana” still featured that hard trap production, but Bktherula relied more on R&B vocals and longer vocal sections.

“Tweakin’ Together” would become her first TikTok hit, and fans loved the heavy bass and dreamier production she brought to the song.

On other singles like “C4” she sings openly and without shame and the vocal effects and complexity of her voice create a calmer, yet still entertaining song atmosphere.

Nirvana, her next album, was a return to true trap sound for Bktherula. MIND FUCK features an exceptional bass, hi-hats, a string loop and aggressive, confrontational and blunt lyrics.

“okok/depressing” was the next real hit, helped by good social media coverage. The distorted and psychedelic production and more subdued percussion show how versatile she was becoming. Digital Nas even featured on her first song and began an amazing repertoire of collaborations.

This endlessly amazing list of collaborations includes many artists:
Matt Ox
Rico Nasty
Ski Mask, the God of the Slump
Destroy Lonely
Youngboy will never be broke again
Cash-Cobain
Kanye West
JID

Her next single would become one of her most successful to date, and once again made the rounds on social media. “Santanny” has been streamed over 20 million times and has a slightly more jangly production, with Bktherula delivering a repeating verse pattern that is instantly catchy.

This was for their second album “LOVE BLACK”, which featured an improved look compared to their first album, with more experimentation in the trap beats and unique instrumentation.

Bktherula finds ultimate comfort in her “LVL” albums

This is when their trap sounds really went in a more experimental direction, mixed with their attempts at R&B songwriting, both “LVL5 P1” and “LVL5 P2”.

This “LVL5” series of albums has really shown Bktherula’s incredible development. More atmospheric and intimate songs like “BELIEVE” are balanced by more gritty songs like “PSSYONFT” on “P1”.

The swirling, spacey song “BOI” is complemented by the energetic and somewhat menacing “TATTI” on “P2.” “P2” is out this year and covers almost all of Bktherula’s discography, from trap to R&B to pure rap. It’s truly a powerful statement.

She even released a small acoustic EP called “Love Nirvana,” a combination of tracks from her first two albums, including acoustic versions of “Summer,” “Uh Huh,” and her hit “Tweakin’ Together.”

Currently on her “I Just Wanna Be Me” tour, she continues to rap about whatever she wants, be it her sexuality, people disrespecting her, or the beautiful seasons. She will continue to make waves with her sophisticated and unique trap sound and be whoever she wants to be.
