Kevin Costner’s son Hayes reveals what it was really like working with his famous father in a rare revelation

While promoting his passion project Horizon: An American SagaKevin Costner was a proud father, raving about his son Hayes’ brief role in it.

The former Yellowstone actor – who confirmed his exit from the show just last week – admitted he “selfishly” hired him for the project so he could spend more time with him. During a recent appearance on the Today Show, he also said: “He’s a beautiful boy and he’s quiet.” He added that 15-year-old Hayes gave a “really beautiful” performance in what he described as a “really complicated scene.”

Now, ahead of the official release of the highly anticipated first installment of the four-part Western saga, Hayes himself has given insights into what it was really like to work with his Oscar-winning father.

In conversation with Entertainment Tonight at the premiere of horizonHayes was equally enthusiastic about working with his father.

“I just thought it was really cool, it was an incredible experience,” He said he saw the film – and his role – come to life on the big screen.

He added lovingly: “I was just really proud of my dad, he worked so long and all I could think about at that moment was him.”

Kevin definitely made an impression on his son as a director and co-star, and the teenager confirmed that he would love to continue working with him. “Yeah, I love it,” he said. “It was super fun. He taught me everything and was by my side the whole time.”

“It was great. I mean, I got to spend all day with him every day and watch him work. I just had so much fun, it was incredible,” he added, recounting the weeks he spent on set with his father.

As much as he enjoyed it, he is now ready to give the two a chance to spend some quality time away from a film set. He said, “He’s so busy, (but) I really hope so,” and revealed that he’ll be able to take a family vacation soon. He also revealed, “I think we’re going to the Bahamas soon and I’m excited about it.”

He has his three youngest children with Christine

Hayes is one of the three children Kevin has with his ex-wife Christine Baumgartnerwith whom he was married from 2004 until last year and with whom he also has Cayden, 17, and Grace, 14. He is also father to Annie, 40, Lily, 37, and Joe, 36, with whom he also Cindy Silvahis wife from 1978 to 1994, and Liam, 26, with his former partner Bridget Rooney.

Although the first part of “Horizon” only premiered at Cannes this year, Kevin has been working on it for so long that Hayes was actually named after a character his father wrote for the project before he was born in 2009.

In April, Kevin joked while speaking to Entertainment Tonight, “I watched him grow up and I was like, ‘Man, I better get my act together and do this movie.'” He added, “He’s very good in the small role he played,” stressing that despite the brevity of the role, he had a real “impact” on the film.
