HBO series “Harry Potter” hires screenwriter and director

HBO’s lengthy development Harry Potter The series has hired two key members of its creative team.

The series is written and shown by Francesca Gardiner, and Mark Mylod is responsible for directing several episodes. Both are Emmy winners for HBO’s Succession – Gardiner as part of the show’s producing team and Mylod as director and producer.

Gardiner’s achievements as a writer and producer also include His dark materials at HBO, KillingEve on BBC America and The tower at Starz. Mylod has episodes of game of Thrones and the upcoming second season of The last of us for HBO and feature film The menu and showtimes Shameless And The affairamong others.

The Potter series was originally intended for Max, where it had been in development since 2021. However, as part of a strategy and brand change for the streamer and its Warner Bros. Discovery sister HBO, the series – along with It prehistory Welcome to Derry and the just-ordered DC Studios drama Lanterns – will become HBO Originals, meaning they will air on the cable channel as well as stream on Max.

The Harry Potter The series will be a “faithful adaptation” of author JK Rowling’s hit fantasy series about the young British wizard. According to HBO, “the series will feature a new cast to lead a new generation of fans, full of fantastic details and beloved characters Harry Potter Fans have loved it for over twenty-five years.”

Casting for the roles of Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint – who starred in the film series alongside a host of British acting greats – will be announced later. A date for the show has not yet been set, although Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav said earlier this year that a 2026 debut was the goal.

Rowling will be an executive producer on the series, but is not expected to be involved on a day-to-day basis. HBO has not yet commented on Rowling’s frequently expressed anti-transgender stance; Casey Bloys, head of HBO and Max Content, said shortly after the series was released: “The TV show is new and exciting, but we’ve been in the Harry Potter business for 20 years; this is not a new decision. We are comfortable in the Potter business. JK is a very online conversation. … It’s very nuanced and complicated and not something we’re going to get into. Our priority is what’s on the screen.”

Gardiner and Mylod will produce the series alongside Rowling and her partners at Bronté Film and TV, Neil Blair and Ruth Kenley-Letts, and David Heyman, who produced the film series. Warner Bros. Television and Bronté Film and TV will produce the show.
