Portage Lake District Library’s summer reading programs encourage children and adults to pick up a book

Summer seems like a great time for an adventure. Whether that means exploring Keweenaw or discovering a new book. This summer, the Portage Lake District Library partnered with local school districts like Hancock and Houghton to encourage children to continue improving their reading skills. Over the weekend, the library hosted the program’s kickoff party during the Bridgefest 2024 Touch a Truck at the Houghton Waterfront Pier.

Librarians recommend starting with about 20 minutes of reading a day, but it’s easy to get engrossed in a really good book and let the time fly by. Kids who want to participate in the summer reading program can pick up a reading log at the Portage Lake District Library or Hancock School Public Library.

PLDL is also partnering with Michigan Tech’s Van Pelt and Opie Library to encourage college students and local residents to pick up a new book. The program opened yesterday, and summer readers received a tote bag and reading journal.

The Portage Lake District Library collects reading logs and awards prizes for reaching reading and activity goals over the course of the summer. Prizes the library awards to readers include Farmer’s Market Bucks, Keweenaw Cash and Black Ice Comics Ice Cream. Anyone interested in participating in a summer reading program for school children or local residents should contact the Portage Lake District Library for more information or visit their website at PLDL.org.
