Andy Murray started his probably last appearance at the Queen’s Club with a win and will face Jordan Thompson in the second round.

Murray, a former world number one, earned a hard-fought 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over Alexei Popyrin on Tuesday to advance in the tournament.

The 37-year-old has fallen out of the world’s top 100 and the win over Popyrin was only his seventh of the season as he continues to struggle with torn ankle ligaments sustained in March and a back injury.

Murray has won the Queen’s tournament five times – a record – but is not expected to continue his career beyond Wimbledon and the Summer Olympics in Paris.

Thompson is currently ranked 43rd in the world, but has been as high as 32nd, and the 30-year-old has won one title this year.

Andy Murray wins the 1,000th game of his career and starts the final of the Queen’s Club in high spirits

Was it relief? Or was it just pure joy? Whatever it was, Andy Murray’s reaction to his first Tour win since March was one of his trademark howls towards his box, a huge rush of adrenaline at the sight of a sensation he hasn’t experienced often in 2024: victory.

With his career set to end this summer, he hasn’t put much stock in his own facts and statistics. His mother Judy told him before the match that this was his 1,000th match on the tour and the five-time Queen’s champion raised his standards for the occasion and for the adoring British crowd. He beat Australian qualifier Alexei Popyrin – ranked 81 places above him – in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 to claim a valuable first-round victory.

His first win at tour level since the hard courts of Miami in late March when he injured his ankle, and his first win since switching from Head to Yonex. Even at the end of his time on the professional market, he is committed to finding any means to gain an advantage.

When does Andy Murray play Jordan Thompson? Queen’s Day 3 order of play and how to watch the match on TV

Andy Murray will face Australian player Jordan Thompson in his second round match at the Queen’s Club on Wednesday.

Murray, a five-time champion at Queen’s, won his first tour match in almost three months with a first-round victory over qualifier Alexei Popyrin on Tuesday, much to the delight of the home crowd celebrating his 1,000th match.

The 37-year-old has admitted this is likely to be his last summer before retirement, with Wimbledon starting on July 1. However, he will not take part in the doubles this week after Dan Evans sustained a knee injury on Tuesday.

Third-seeded Grigor Dimitrov will also be in action at Queen’s on Wednesday, as will fourth-seeded Taylor Fritz of the USA.
