“Impossible 8” brings back Rolf Saxon from the famous safe scene in the first film
After 25 years, fans of Mission: Impossible may finally learn what happened to William Donloe, the CIA analyst from the original film who was supposed to be monitoring top-secret documents before Ethan Hunt falls from the ceiling and steals them in the now-famous scene.
On Wednesday, “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning” author Christopher McQuarrie revealed on his Instagram account that actor Rolf Saxon, who played William Donloe in the first part of “Mission: Impossible,” will return in next year’s series finale, “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two.”

McQuarrie shared a photo of Saxon’s character, who now sports a beard after the events of the original Mission: Impossible. After Tom Cruise’s superspy Ethan Hunt hung himself from a cable and lowered himself from the ceiling of the CIA’s maximum security vault to steal the NOC list, Donloe was promptly fired and transferred to a polar satellite station in Alaska.
Earlier on Wednesday, McQuarrie also announced that Inuit actress Lucy Tulugarjuk would be joining the cast. She is wearing a warm, thick parka on what looks like snow. Could the latest Mission: Impossible series return to its roots and tie in with the first film?
“Ted Lasso” star and Emmy winner Hannah Waddingham will also join the cast of “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two,” McQuarrie also announced on Instagram earlier this month. The film is set to hit theaters on June 28, 2024, less than a year after “Part One” hits theaters this summer on July 14, 2023.
Saxon isn’t the only familiar face returning to the Mission: Impossible franchise. The seventh and penultimate film will see Henry Czerny return as Eugene Kittridge, the former director of the IMF who mysteriously returned from the original Mission: Impossible. Vanessa Kirby will also play Alanna Mitsopolis, a black market arms dealer who is the daughter of Max Mitsopolis, who was played by Vanessa Redgraves in the first Mission: Impossible.
