Women’s club awards scholarships – Pleasanton Express

The Woman’s Club of Pleasanton recently awarded 20 scholarships to high school graduates throughout Atascosa County. The honored students represented Pleasanton, Jourdanton, Poteet and Charlotte high schools, as well as the county and those who are homeschooled. Each student received a $1,500 scholarship.

In 1937, the club established the Florence Bowen Smith English Award for the Pleasanton High School senior with the highest grade point average in English. The award was originally a dictionary to assist her in her pursuit of higher education, but was later converted to a $500 scholarship.

The scholarships are made possible through support from the community and the Woman’s Club Thrift Shop.
