MasterChef back to win: Poh Ling Yeow is ‘obsessed with being famous’

She is an absolute fan favorite with Master Chef viewers and has been used to being in the spotlight since she rose to fame in 2009.

And it seems like Poh Ling Yeow was always destined to be in front of flashing lights, revealing in the podcast Freedom Hunters with Suzanne Delahunty that she has always found the idea of being in the public eye appealing.

“I dreamed a lot about being some kind of entertainer. I sang a lot into hairbrushes and did my own accents,” Poh said in August 2019 while chatting about her childhood.

The 47-year-old said she loved picking up scripts and would always sit there and play all kinds of characters.

“I didn’t know what I wanted to be, but looking back, there was a lot going on,” she said.

Poh then completed a Bachelor of Visual Communications with a specialization in illustration.

“The idea of doing something like that was very attractive to me because I was obsessed with being popular, which I wasn’t at all, and I thought, ‘I guess this is what you do, this is what you do, you put yourself in the spotlight,'” she said.

“I liked the idea of being an entertainer because people like you.”

During the week, Poh hit back after fans of Master Chef called her out for “stressing” her out by playing with fire when it came to the cooking sessions on the show.

The 47-year-old uploaded a snapshot of her pressure test challenge dish, a hearty beef pie with a blue cheese crust, to her page.

She captioned the snapshot: “In answer to the questions, why do I keep pushing my time limits? Quite simply, that’s why I came back to the show – to see what’s possible.”

Fans’ strong reaction to Poh’s “stressed” cooking methods came shortly after others had criticised the judges’ preferential treatment of some contestants.

Many quickly made it clear that they had a problem with the jury’s treatment and not with the returning star.

“Are the judges contractually obligated to praise every dish Poh makes?” one woman wondered. “She’s OK as a person, but she’s starting to get old, and she’s only been doing so for a few weeks!”

Others feared that the show would become a “poo show” and that the other candidates would be unfairly given less airtime.
