VFL Shuler headlines Boys and Girls Club Champions Dinner | WJHL

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) – It was an unforgettable evening at the Greeneville – Greene County Boys and Girls Club’s Champions Dinner on Tuesday.

Heath Shuler, VFL quarterback and former US representative, was chosen as the event’s guest speaker. The dinner is one of the club’s major fundraisers during the year – and it’s a club that Shuler supports wholeheartedly.

“It’s just great when a community comes together around an organization like the Boys and Girls Club to provide a safe, great place for kids to hang out after school and have fun and take advantage of these resources,” he said. “I just think it’s amazing how many lives you can change for the better when you can provide this service to a community.”

Aside from his speaking duties, the 1993 SEC Player of the Year signed a few autographs and mingled with the numerous Vols fans in attendance.

Those fans have had every reason to cheer over the past few days and seasons, and Shuler believes the current form is thanks to outstanding leadership from top to bottom.

“If you look from Randy Boyd to the Chancellor to Danny White,” he said, “those are probably three incredible leaders in the right places – probably better than we’ve ever had before.”

“And when you look at the coaching staffs, they’re all very similar in the way they do things,” he continued. “Incredible, high-caliber people. They’re great coaches, they recruit extremely well. But I think the most important thing is the impact they have on the lives of these student-athletes.”

That includes Shuler’s son, Navy, who will play quarterback at Rocky Top as a redshirt senior this season.
