Beckhams don’t want to read book because they “don’t like negative publicity,” claims author
What did you miss?
Author Tom Bower has admitted he doesn’t think Victoria and David Beckham will like his explosive new book about them.
The author, who has previously written about Mohamed Al-Fayed and Simon Cowell, turns his attention to the A-listers in “The House of Beckham: Money, Sex and Power.” The book looks at the couple’s career and relationship, including David’s alleged infidelity. David and Victoria Beckham have always denied the allegations made by Rebecca Loos in 2004.
Appearing on ITV’s Lorraine, Bower said he didn’t think the Beckhams would be impressed as they “don’t like negative publicity”. He also said he didn’t think the football star and Spice Girl turned designer would even read it.
What, how and why?
Presenter Lorraine Kelly had suggested that the Beckhams might “quite like” the book. But Bower replied: “Oh, I don’t think so. They don’t read books. They don’t even read their own autobiography, they’ve admitted that.”
“They don’t like negative publicity, so I don’t think they’ll be very happy with the book,” he continued.
“But then again, everyone is talking about the Beckhams, the book sparked a huge discussion about them, so that’s not a bad thing for them.”
Bower also told Kelly that he believed the strength of the “Beckham brand” lay in the couple’s “manipulation of the media,” suggesting they were very PR savvy.
“She knows that the brand only works when they are together,” he said of Victoria.
He continued: “It’s all about image, it’s about complacency. He’s a footballer, she’s a pop singer… they have a great life – cars, boats, planes, the whole thing. They have a great time on their own terms.”
“They have a lot of grief,” he added. “But she is respected and loved by a lot of women because she actually survived, made it and kept a family together. And so there is a lot of compassion and a lot of love for her.”
“In the end, she got through it, and that deserves respect,” he said.
Tom Bower on the possibility of a knighthood for David Beckham
Kelly also asked Bower if he thought David would end up being knighted, something that has been widely speculated about among fans in recent years.
However, he said he did not think it would happen. “No, I don’t think so,” Bower said when Kelly asked him about it. He explained: “At the end of the day, very, very few footballers get knighted. He’s beautiful and he’s scored some incredible goals, but he’s missed a lot more than he’s scored!”
Bowers’ book looks at David’s football career. The author shared that he felt David was “not a great captain,” but continued: “He was a big star, very popular, very beautiful. Great presence. That’s what got him points.”

What the Beckhams said about the allegations against Rebecca Loos
In October last year, the Beckhams addressed the allegations surrounding Rebecca Loos in their Netflix documentary series BECKHAM. It was 20 years ago that the footballer’s personal assistant, Loos, made a sensational claim in 2004 that she had had an affair with the married star.
Here’s what the Beckhams said in their own words about Loos’ allegations and the impact the headlines have had on their marriage in their 2023 Netflix docuseries.
Victoria Beckham said: “It was the hardest time because it felt like the whole world was against us. That’s the point – if I’m completely honest, it was us against each other. You know, up until Madrid, sometimes it felt like we were against everyone else, but we were together, we were connected, we had each other.”
“But when we were in Spain, we didn’t really feel like we had each other either. And that’s sad. I can’t even put into words how hard it was and how much it affected me. It was a nightmare. It was an absolute circus – and everyone loves it when the circus comes to town, don’t they? Unless you’re in the middle of it.”
Her husband added: “Victoria means everything to me. It was incredibly difficult to see her suffer. But we are fighters and at that time we had to fight for each other, we had to fight for our family, but it was worth the fight. At the end of the day, it’s our private life.”
