After years of development hell, the Green Lantern series is finally moving forward

The DCUs Green Lantern Series, Lanternshas just received a major update. The series has been officially ordered and will no longer be streamed exclusively on Max.



By deadline, Lanterns has been ordered as a series at HBO. Although the series will also be available on Max, it was previously expected to be available exclusively on the streaming platform. The series order at HBO is part of a new strategy to broadcast some of the more expensive scripted films on television, joining other franchise titles such as Welcome to Derry and that Harry Potter Restart series. The new Lanterns Series follows “New recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops who are drawn into a dark, Earth-based mystery while investigating a murder in the heart of America.”

Lanterns went through many changes behind the scenes that didn’t come to fruition over the years of development. The version that was finally greenlit was created by the creative team of Chris Mundy (Ozarks), Damon Lindelof (Guardian), and comic book writer Tom King. Their story will be told over the course of eight episodes, with Mundy serving as showrunner while Lindelof and King co-write. All three will executive produce.

It is not yet known who will star in Lanterns

DC is planning a new live-action Green Lantern series since at least 2019. At the time, Arrowverse’s Greg Berlanti was attached to the project. As the project moved forward, it was reported in 2022 that Finn Wittrock and Jeremy Irvine would star in the series as Guy Gardner and Alan Scott, respectively. Those actors are no longer attached to the project, as Wittrock recently confirmed, so it’s unclear for now who will star in the series.

The cast for LanternsIt is known who will play a version of the superhero in the DCU. Nathan Fillion will play in James Gunn’s Superman as the Guy Gardner version of Green Lantern. It is unclear whether he will appear in Lanterns.
