Viewers were baffled by Grande’s changed voice, but the singer argued that it was nothing new

Ariana Grande has offered her fans an explanation after recordings of her conversation with Penn Badgley left viewers completely confused.

It can sometimes be jarring to hear singers speak in their normal voice – Adele’s thick accent is one example that springs to mind – but this time it wasn’t an accent that raised questions among fans.

Instead, Grande left her fans stunned when she spoke to the You Star in an episode of his podcast, Podcrushedabout her career and her upcoming film, Evil.

Although we’re used to hearing Grande sing rather than engage in normal conversation, our fans were still surprised to hear her speak in a deeper tone than they’re used to.

Things only got weirder when she suddenly took on a higher pitched voice, causing many viewers to share their confusion on social media.

“This voice change makes me laugh (crying emojis). Normal Ariana came out for a second,” one person wrote.

A snippet from the interview, headlined “The voice change??”, finally caught Grande’s attention after making the rounds online, and with so many people asking the same question, the singer decided to offer an explanation.

She responded to the video with a comment and explained that the change was conscious and intentional.

Grande wrote: “(It’s) a habit (of speaking like this for two years) and also (for) the health of my voice. I often change my vocal pitch (high/low) intentionally depending on how much I sing.”

She stressed that this was nothing new and added: “I’ve always done it this way, BYE.”

Grande revealed in the interview that she has been singing a lot in the last few weeks – even though her last album only came out in March.

“I went into the studio the day after the Met (Gala) and stayed for about 10 days and literally lived there,” she told Badgley.

“I’ve written a lot, and there may be more to come. At some point I’d like to do a deluxe edition.”

Many of Grande’s fans rushed to her aid after people questioned her voice breaking, with one person encouraging people to get over it.

“This discourse y’all have every week about Ariana’s voice is so tiring. Wdsf we’re told she has two different voices keep going (sic),” one wrote.

Another agreed, writing, “I honestly refuse to believe that so many people are pissed off by Ariana’s voice. FOR THE FUCK, is this really that serious?”

Fans will soon hear a lot more from Grande, both speaking and singing, as she will appear in the role of Glinda in the film version of the musical Evil.
