Khandala may be one of the most popular weekend getaway destinations for residents of Mumbai and Pune, but the hill town in Maharashtra is more known for its pleasant weather or trekking, as it features in the song ‘Aati Kya Khandala.’ The iconic song from the 1998 film Ghulamnot only marked Aamir Khan‘s singing debut, but also earned Rani Mukherji the label “Khandala girl”. While the team was still discussing what kind of song should be featured in the film sequence, Aamir surprised everyone by crooning ‘Sagar Jaisi Aankhon Wali’ on the way to the set. Lalit, who found his voice impressive, suggested that Aamir should sing a song for Ghulam. While everyone was excited at the prospect of the actor singing the song, Aamir seemed a little surprised and did not immediately agree.

The next breakthrough came with writer Nitin Raikwar, who wrote the lyrics for ‘Aati Kya Khandala’ that perfectly suited the style of the film and Aamir’s character. The idea was well received, but Aamir had his reservations. Lalit recalled that the Dangal actor was very ‘cautious’ and suggested recording the song secretly. Aamir, the perfectionist, suggested that if he was not happy with the result, we would scrap it and try something else.

Lalit revealed that despite his busy shooting schedule, Aamir promised to rehearse the song regularly. When the rehearsals began, Aamir surprised everyone with his voice and captured the swagger that director Vikram Bhatt had envisioned for the song. While recording the song was a cakewalk for team Ghulam, filming the song turned out to be a tedious task as Aamir was not happy with the first shoot of the song and ‘cancelled’ the first shoot and re-shot the entire sequence. The second shoot was exceptional and captured the essence of the song perfectly. The composer said that Ghulam was a crucial project for Jatin-Lalit, especially with Aamir in the lead role, adding that the film’s music had to be exceptional and the entire music team put in tremendous efforts to ensure its success.

He sang ‘Aati Kya Khandala’ for Aamir, who immediately liked the song and recommended it to Vikram. “We had completed the film, but when I heard the song, I wanted it to be in the film. So we deleted a few scenes to accommodate the song. When I heard the song, I knew only Aamir could do justice to it. When I told him to sing it, he was like, ‘Are you mad?’ But we convinced him and the rest is history,” Nitin said, adding that the song was added to the film at the last minute.
