James Gunn confirms that Green Lantern TV series will get a series

James Gunn has confirmed that the long-awaited television series Green Lantern has been ordered for a full season.

Deadline reported on Monday (June 25) that the series titled Lanternswould the Harry Potter TV show and It prehistory Welcome to Derry as it moves from exclusive streaming on Max to broadcasting on HBO. All three shows will also stream on Max.

The cosmic adventure series is being adapted for live-action films by Guardianby Damon Lindelof, OzarksChris Mundy and acclaimed DC Comics writer Tom King. DCU bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran will produce Lanterns.

The series revolves around new recruit John Stewart, who joins the DC Universe’s cosmic police force known as the Green Lanterns, where he is mentored by veteran hero Hal Jordan. The cast has not yet been announced.

Gunn and Safran said today: “We are thrilled to bring this groundbreaking DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon and Tom at the helm. John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and Lanterns brings them to life in an original detective story that is a fundamental part of the unified DCU that we will see next summer with Superman.”

HBO has ordered an eight-part series. Production details and international release dates will be announced later.

“We are thrilled to be reuniting with Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof, who are collaborating with Tom on this fresh take on DC’s Green Lantern,” HBO CEO Casey Bloys said Tuesday.

“As part of James and Peter’s vision for the DC Universe, this first new live-action series will usher in an exciting new era.”

Gunn and Safran’s renamed and redesigned DCU officially launches with David Corensets Superman film in 2025 (although they previously confirmed that Xolo Maridueña’s Blue Beetle is the first official character in their universe).

Last year, the duo announced an ambitious film slate for heroes like Supergirl (with House of the Dragonby Milly Alcock), The Authority, Batman and Swamp Thing as well as numerous other television series complement the film universe.
