South Korean groups file war crimes charges against Israeli politicians

In South Korea, seven high-ranking Israeli officials have been charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity, the US news agency United Press International (UPI) reported on Monday.

The seven Israeli politicians include Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Isaac Herzog, Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, Foreign Minister Israel Katz, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.

The charges were brought by the South Korean non-governmental organization People’s Solidarity for Participatory Democracy (PSPD), Asian Dignity Initiatives and more than 5,000 individuals, including South Korean politicians, UPI said.

The PSPD claims that the Israeli officials mentioned are involved in the planning and execution of crimes against humanity, genocide and war crimes.

They detailed the crimes listed, including the obstruction of humanitarian aid and activities, attacks on medical facilities, the use of illegal chemical weapons and the use of starvation as a war tactic.

A representative of Asian Dignity Initiatives said during the discussion of the indictment: “The indictment means that about 5,000 co-plaintiffs have admitted that genocide took place in Gaza. They not only mourn but also insist that the perpetrators be severely punished under South Korean law,” UPI quoted the official as saying.

NGO calls for extradition and prosecution of Israeli officials

The PSPD demanded that the seven officials be extradited to South Korea so that they could be investigated and prosecuted under Korean law.

Ynet It was also reported that the Israeli Foreign Ministry allegedly told Ben-Gvir and other officials to consult with the ministry before future trips to South Korea to avoid extradition.

Ynet learned that other ministries are also involved in the case, including the Justice Ministry and the Attorney General’s Office.
