The 63-year-old actor recently said in an interview with The New York Times that he couldn’t play Harvey Milk in the celebrated milk today, when you look back at his filmography.

While he said it was “the last time I had fun on a film set” and that “I was unhappy on sets for 15 years,” he also said he could not act in the film today because casting straight actors in roles of queer characters has become a controversial move.

“No. That could not happen at a time like this,” he said. “We live in a time of enormous abuses. It is a timid and guileless policy towards the human imagination.”

Regarding his 15 miserable years on film sets, he said it was because he felt that “an actor who is playing a leading role, is a well-known actor, is well paid and has a leading position on a film, has to perform with energy and be, in a sense, the director’s bodyguard.”

“I was just slogging through all of this, and it was exhausting,” he continued. “Most of the time I was just thinking, ‘What time is it? When are we going to get there?’ … I was sure it was over, but I didn’t know how I was going to run my household or travel freely or do things like that if I stopped doing it.”
