Golden State Warriors GM gives no information about Chris Paul’s future

The Golden State Warriors have had an unprecedented run over the last decade. Now, heading into the offseason, they face many difficult decisions. After a subpar season, the team must decide how to move forward. One of the big names on the team is Chris Paul. Golden State hoped he would add a veteran player to the second unit. However, injuries and poor play caused the team to struggle for most of the year. Warriors GM Mike Dunleavy gave a surprising answer when asked about Paul’s future.

Golden State Warriors GM on Chris Paul

Golden State Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy said that “everything is on the table” when it comes to Chris Paul. He even mentioned that they might try to release the former All-Star. It all comes down to the desire to save money. Paul has a non-guaranteed salary of $30 million next season. If the Warriors decide to pay it, they could face a huge luxury tax, something owner Joe Lacob isn’t too keen on.

“Our plan 1 or 1A is that we want to get out of the tax, and we believe we have a way to do that. That’s the plan, not just under the second apron. I’ll tell you why that’s important, because the truth is we need to get out of the tax in two out of four years to get this repeat offender thing off our books. We don’t want to be a repeat offender.

It’s so cost-prohibitive. That’s not to say we wouldn’t do it if we had to, but you have to consider the downsides. So that’s the plan, to try and do it, and we believe we can keep our team together and even keep the players that are. We can maybe bring back players with different numbers and so on.”

It’s not just about the luxury tax. There are other decisions to be made regarding the setup as well.

The Klay Thompson Edition

The Golden State Warriors have a decision to make about Klay Thompson. He has given so much to the organization, but he is also over 30 and his injury history is getting longer. However, Golden State does not want to lose a franchise favorite player that people want to see. If the team decides to keep Chris Paul, it could result in them losing Thompson.

The team has options but needs to make a decision quickly. If they make a trade, they could guarantee some of Paul’s salary, but that has to happen before June 28. Ultimately, the Golden State Warriors have some tough decisions to make about their roster. They can’t keep everyone unless they want to pay a huge luxury tax. This team is hoping to make the most of the late stages of Steph Curry’s career, and the front office needs to find the best way to do that.
