Michigan Adventure closes due to power outage

MUSKEGON COUNTY, MI – Michigan Adventure will be closed today due to inclement weather and a power outage, the theme park announced Tuesday morning.

Michigan Adventure announced the closure on social media at 10 a.m., an hour before the scheduled opening.

A severe thunderstorm swept through West Michigan from Lake Michigan early this morning. The Muskegon area was advised to seek shelter as the storm developed around 6 a.m. with possible wind gusts between 60 mph and isolated 70 mph.

The severe storm caused power outages for more than 132,000 Consumers Energy customers as of 8:45 a.m. Tuesday.

According to the theme park’s social media, Michigan Adventure is also without power. On Facebook, the park informed visitors that the park was closed for the day.

Michigan Adventure’s social media post went on to say, “Most tickets are valid through Labor Day (September 2, 2024),” but did not address ticket refunds.

Storm damage at the site was minimal, with the main problem being the power outage, said Cindy Larsen, president of the Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce. Larsen was informed by the park that they expect to reopen on Wednesday, June 26, when power is restored.

Another 11,000 Great Lakes Energy customers are without power. Counties with significant outages include Allegan, Barry, Calhoun, Ionia, Kalamazoo, Kent, Mecosta, Muskegon, Newaygo, Oceana, Ottawa and Van Buren.

As the storm moves across the state, the National Weather Service warned that lightning could still be common even after the rain subsides. The NWS warned that this type of lightning is usually the most deadly.
