Leslie Headlands Cult of Lovee will appear on Broadway this fall

Headland’s family drama will be complemented by a new work by Pulitzer Prize winner Donald Margulies as part of Second Stage Theater’s Off-Broadway fall season.

Second Stage Theater has announced its program for the coming fall, including the Broadway debut of the Emmy-nominated production by Leslye Headland (Bachelorette, Star Wars: The Acolyte, Russian Doll) play Cult of Loveand the off-Broadway premiere of the play by Pulitzer Prize winner Donald Margulies lunar eclipse.

Director: Trip Cullman, Cult of Love “The Dahl” begins performances at Broadway’s Helen Hayes Theatre on November 20, with an opening night scheduled for December 12. It centers on the Dahl family’s four adult children and their partners returning home for a rocky Christmas celebration. Casting for the family drama will be announced at a later date.

The season will also include Margulies’ play lunar eclipsestarring Tony winner Reed Birney and Drama Desk nominee Lisa Emery. Directed by Kate Whoriskey, the play begins performances October 9, with a premiere scheduled for October 30. The play explores the fragility of memory and the eroding passage of time and centers on a couple sitting outside their Kentucky farm watching the lunar eclipse. As the seven phases of the celestial phenomenon unfold, the pair sip bourbon and reflect on how little they really know each other after decades of marriage.

This is the first program led by Interim Artistic Director Bennett Leak, who has taken over from Founding Director Carole Rothman, who will remain with the troupe through August. Rothman has led the troupe since its founding in 1979, when she sought to create a new company that supported living American playwrights and new emerging talent.

Leak has worked in New York theater for nearly two decades and joined Second Stage in 2015 as director of special events, where he produced large-scale fundraising events and raised over $7 million for the organization. Leak became the company’s associate artistic director in 2019 and director of artistic production in 2021.
