The weather radar for Michigan looks ominous on Tuesday. Rain has blanketed most of the Lower Peninsula since the morning, and hazardous weather is expected across the state.

According to the National Weather Service, a severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for Washtenaw, Lenawee and Monroe counties until noon. A line of storms is expected to primarily impact the area along and west of Interstate 75, bringing potentially damaging wind gusts of up to 60 mph, heavy rains, lightning, hail up to 1 inch and flooding.

However, there is also a slight risk of severe storms for all of southeast Michigan as the storms move in a southeasterly direction.

Thunderstorms are also possible Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, with a slight risk for severe storms. The greatest risk is along and south of I-94. Damaging winds near 60 mph, hail of about 1 inch, and flooding are possible.

Power outages in Michigan

At Consumers Energy, 120,313 customers were affected by power outages as of 8:15 a.m. As the storm surge approached the Detroit metropolitan area, 1,845 DTE customers were without power.

Avoid Lake Michigan beaches during a storm surge

The NWS expected dangerous waves and rip currents in Lake Michigan on Tuesday due to storms hitting the state.

Michigan meteorologist Bill Steffen reported a storm surge on Lake Michigan at Holland State Park in Holland and said water levels are still rising. He said waves rose from 3 feet to 7.2 feet in an hour, according to his posts on X.
