Karamo asks court to reinstate her as Michigan GOP chairwoman • Michigan Advance

The ousted former chairwoman of the Michigan Republican Party wants a judge to reinstate her to office.

A lawyer for Kristina Karamo filed a motion Monday with the Michigan Court of Appeals to expedite the motion to overturn her dismissal. confirmed in February by Kent County District Court Judge J. Joseph Rossi. This came as the 2024 election in Michigan – a key swing state – is already underway, with mail-in ballots for the August 6 primary scheduled to be mailed out this week.

A faction of the state party voted at a meeting on January 6 in Commerce Township Displace Karamo due to the dire state of party finances and then selected former US Representative Pete Hoekstra appointed as the new chairman of MIGOP.

Hoekstra was also nominated by the Republican National Committee (RNC) as Chairman of MIGOP and approved by former President Donald Trump.

Karamo justified his request for an expedited decision on the appeal with the fact that the Republican National Convention is taking place in less than a month.

“Please help fix this injustice by reversing it,” wrote the Detroit News reported Thomas Hartman wrote in the filing. “Judge Rossi’s ruling must be overturned and the permanent injunction lifted, and soon, as all the events are looming in the near future.”

Karamo told According to National Review, the process that led to her removal was invalid.

“Pete Hoekstra and his conservative con artists and operatives have spent the last year sabotaging the Michigan Republican Party because he and the failed status quo he represents do not want to see progress and growth in the Republican Party,” she said via text message.

Hoekstra, meanwhile, stresses that the party has been united since he took office as chairman.

“The Michigan Republican Party is united in a single mission – to vote Republican on every ballot in November,” Hoekstra said. “The state grassroots committee, donors and elected officials all support this state party and we work as a team.”

Karamo, the Republican candidate for Secretary of State in 2022, was Elected MIGOP Chairman in 2023 from a large field of participants to replace retiring chairman Ron Weiser. Hoekstra had considered running at the time, but decided against it.

Karamo had won Trump’s early support for the post of Secretary of State after vehemently defending his false claims of election fraud in 2020. While Trump praised Karamo’s selection as chairwoman, the former president had initially supported failed candidate for Attorney General Matthew DePerno, who also supported Trump’s debunked claims of election fraud.

DePerno is now a Candidate for the Supreme Court of Michiganwhile he is also accused of manipulating voting machines after the 2020 presidential election.

No date has yet been set for a hearing on Karamo’s request for an expedited appeal.
