Virginia-based singer-songwriter Shaboozey has timed the release of his viral single “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” perfectly in 2024. After generating some hype on social media with his simmering, brooding “Let It Burn,” which dropped in October 2023, Beyoncé offered Shaboozey one of the most powerful co-signs in modern music, signing the rising artist to two COWBOY CARTER Cuts, ‘SWEET ★ HONEY ★ BUCKIIN’ and ‘SPAGHETTII’, towards the end of March 2024.

Two weeks later, Shaboozey released “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” – and the rest, as they say, is history. It quickly established itself as one of the biggest releases of the year – across all genres – and stormed to No. 1 on numerous charts, including Billboard’s Digital Song Sales, Hot Country Songs, Country Streaming Songs and Country Digital Song Sales, and secured the No. 3 spot on the Billboard Hot 100.

Since its release, the uptempo track has been everywhere, and Shaboozey continued the momentum by releasing his third album two months later. Where I was is not where I am goingfeaturing “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” “Let It Burn,” and a number of other standout songs that showcase Shaboozey’s seamless fusion of hip-hop and outlaw country.

Shaboozey weaves the melody of J-Kwon’s “Tipsy” into “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” with the “Let It Burn” crooner transforming the 2004 rap hit into a classic country drinking soundtrack.

Shaboozey’s signature relaxed cadence brings a certain playfulness and elegance to “A Bar Song (Tipsy),” with the up-and-coming artist’s charismatic delivery softened by energetic clapping, driving drum pattern, and loose acoustic guitar.

“My baby wants a Birkin, she told me that all night

Gasoline and food, the list is endless

This 9 to 5 job isn’t working, why the hell am I working so hard?

I can’t worry about my problems, I can’t bear them when I’m away, uh”

Shaboozey begins “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” by lamenting that his girlfriend constantly begs him to buy her a Birkin—a notoriously expensive Hermes bag that costs thousands of dollars. He piles this worry onto his long list of financial worries, wondering why he puts so much into his day job when he barely has enough money left to buy basic necessities like “gas and groceries.”

He turns around and decides to put his worries aside since he can’t take them with him when he dies, so he doesn’t mind worrying about them now.

“One, here comes the two to the three to the four

Tell them, bring out another one, we need a lot more

Two step on the table, she doesn’t need a dance floor

Oh my God”

This sets the party mood of the bridge, which begins with another homage to J-Kwon’s “Tipsy.” Shaboozey uses the same lyrics, “One, here comes the two to the three to the four,” before asking the bartender to hurry up with his drinks.

Even the reference to the famous Texas two-step is a nod to J-Kwon’s club track, as the St. Louis rapper began his 2004 hit by repeating “Two-step with me.” The now-iconic line “Oh my, good Lord” appears again and again throughout “A Bar Song (Tipsy).”

“Can someone pour me a double whiskey?

You know that I and Jack Daniels have a shared past

There is a party downtown near Fifth Street

Everyone at the bar gets tipsy

Everyone at the bar gets tipsy

Everyone at the bar gets tipsy”

The infectious chorus revolves around Shaboozey’s love of Jack Daniel’s whiskey, he tells someone to pour him a double shot, then jokes that he’s had a long relationship with Jack, implying that it’s his favorite drink. He explains that the party is taking place in Nashville near Fifth Street – which made Shaboozey’s Music City performance of “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” at CMA Fest 2024 all the more special.

“I’m Boozey since I left, I don’t change for a check

Tell my mom I didn’t forget (oh, Lord)

Woke up drunk at 10am, we’re doing this shit again

Tell your girl to bring a friend (oh, Lord)”

In the second verse, Shaboozey reminds the listener that all his success won’t change who he is, and the genre-mixer hopes his mother knows this.

Then he quickly turns the focus back to the party, and Shaboozey wakes up the next day still drunk. Then he decides to keep the good mood going that night too.

Shaboozey wants to make sure there are plenty of pretty women in the bar tonight, so he turns to the male patrons and tells them to make sure their girlfriends bring their boyfriends.

“One, here comes the two to the three to the four

When the final call comes and they throw us out the door

It’s already late, but the ladies still want more

Oh my God”

He delivers a variation on the earlier bridge here, again outlining his intention to stay in the bar and drink as long as possible. He notes that they’re about to get kicked out, but the women he’s been partying with aren’t ready to break up yet – implying that he’s broken up with the girlfriend who wanted the Birkin in the beginning. The theme of endless partying and refusing to return to real-world problems helps make “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” an archetypal anthem of escapism.

What did Shaboozey say about “A Bar Song (Tipsy)”?

In an interview in 2024 with BillboardShaboozey revealed what inspired him to interpolate J-Kwon’s 2004 club-ready hit “Tipsy” for “A Bar Song (Tipsy):” “I’ve been wanting to revamp a song from the 2000s for a while. I just said, ‘Everyone at the bar is getting tipsy,’ and then we were like, ‘Oh, shit!’ The producer picked up the guitar and started playing the chords, and then we started writing, just having fun and being creative.”

In the same article, Shaboozey mentioned that J-Kwon has regularly expressed his appreciation for the tribute, with the rapper even more “excited” about the track than Shaboozey. Shaboozey pointed out, “When you feel like you do the song justice by making it yourself and then you get that co-sign, not everyone gets that.”

Can someone pour me a double whiskey (double whiskey)

You know that Jack Daniels and I have a common past (we have known each other for a long time)

There’s a party downtown near Fifth Street (okay, let’s go)

Everyone at the bar is getting tipsy (everyone at the bar is getting tipsy)

Everyone at the bar is getting tipsy (everyone at the bar is getting tipsy)

Everyone at the bar gets tipsy

One, here comes the two to the three to the four

When the final call comes and they throw us out the door

It’s already late, but the ladies still want more

Oh my God

Can someone pour me a double whiskey (double whiskey)

You know that I and Jack Daniels have a history together (way back)

There’s a party downtown near Fifth Street (come on)

Everyone at the bar is getting tipsy (ooh)

Can someone pour me a double whiskey (double whiskey)

You know that I and Jack Daniels have a history together (me and JD)

At the bottom of a bottle they’ll miss me (they’ll miss me)

Everyone at the bar gets tipsy (Bar gets tipsy)

Everyone at the bar gets tipsy

Everyone at the bar gets tipsy”
