MARSHALL, Texas – When you leave your child with a babysitter, it’s important that they have skills that will help in an emergency, so the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office is doing its part to make sure teens are prepared to be the best babysitters possible.

For the past three years, the Sheriff’s Office has hosted the Babysitters Club to teach teens CPR, first aid, water safety and even how to make a 911 call, all skills they can take with them and use while babysitting.

“We train every day for the job that we do. This is nothing more than a training scenario for the job that they’re going to do, and the fact that they have CPR certification is remarkable to me. I mean, you don’t meet many 13-year-old kids that go out to do a job or take care of a sibling or another child, and they know how to save that child’s life,” said Sheriff BJ Fletcher.

Participants were grateful for the skills they learned in the Baby-Sitters Club.

“When I’m older, I want to be a babysitter and make more money. And if something happens, I’ll know what to do,” says Baylee Alexander, a Baby-Sitters Club participant.

Since the program began, over 200 youth have been certified in CPR at the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office.
