Watch Taylor Tomlinson, Ramy Youssef and THR Standup Comedy Roundtable

The six comedians who gathered to The Hollywood ReporterThe band’s first stand-up Emmy roundtable event had a lot to catch up on, from their early days on the road to their complicated impulses to turn tragedy into comedy.

Appropriately, they may have had no problem playfully teasing each other.

The group – Mike Birbiglia, Alex Edelman, Jacqueline Novak, Jenny Slate, Taylor Tomlinson and Ramy Youssef – have a lot of history together, after all. In fact, Birbiglia was a producer on both Edelman’s and Novak’s specials, and almost all of them have worked together in some form: shows, tours, appearances on Birbiglia’s Working it out Podcast or Tomlinson’s After midnight Late night show.

“Jacqueline, Jenny and I used to do a lot of shows at this place in New York that no longer exists,” says Birbiglia. “And I feel a warmth for you because we used to do shows for about 10 people.”

Slate adds, from a place that now appears to be a Buffalo Exchange: “You would Hope for 10 people. Unless it was Eugene Mirman’s show.”

Novak chimed in: “Yes, that felt like The Tonight Show.”

Edelman, meanwhile, came onto the scene around the same time as Youssef, and first became a regular onstage at Cake Shop, a show Novak put on with fellow comedian and frequent collaborator Kate Berlant. As for Youssef, “The very first one-person show I saw was Jenny’s at UCB,” he tells the group. “I was probably 17 or 18, and I literally thought, ‘I want to do that.'”

This storyline allowed the sextet to talk honestly about all sorts of topics, including their fears and their failures, with at least one comedian becoming visibly emotional over the course of the hour. Watch the full discussion above.
