Fans of Richard Osman’s book The Thursday Murder Club will be overjoyed to hear that an adaptation of the bestselling novel is in the works and that it sounds so brilliant.
The book, first published in 2020, is about four unlikely friends who live in a retirement home in a peaceful English village and meet every week to investigate unsolved murders.
But things take a turn when a brutal murder happens right under their noses and they find themselves drawn into solving the case in real life. Oh, we love crime novels! So what do we know about the crime adaptation?
Who is in the cast of The Thursday Murder Club?
The four main characters in Richard Osman’s book are Elizabeth, Joyce, Ibrahim and Ron, all of whom are approaching 80. In an episode of his podcast The rest is entertainment, was released in April 2024, the author announced that the main actors for the adaptation have been cast:
- Helen Mirren will play Elizabeth Beth
- Sir Ben Kingsley will play Ibraheem Arif
- Pierce Brosnan will play Ron Ritchie
- Celia Imrie will play Joyce Meadowcroft
Later, in June 2024, Richard announced that a whole host of familiar faces would also be added to the list, and wow, that cast is impressive:
- Jonathan Pryce will play Elizabeth’s husband Stephen
- Naomi Ackie will play police officer Donna de Freitas
- David Tennant will play a currently unknown role
- Danny Mays will play a currently unknown role
- Henry Lloyd-Hughes will play a currently undisclosed role
“I think this is the best British cast since (Harry Potter) movies,” Richard Osman said of the actors who took on his roles. “There are some great names and there are a few more names coming.”
When was the adaptation of “The Thursday Murder Club” announced?
Already in September 2020, at the same time as the book was published, Steven Spielberg acquired the adaptation rights, with his production company Amblin Entertainment officially taking over the management.
It took over three years for further details about the production to emerge, and Netflix announced in April 2024 that they were involved in the project. “I am so proud of this book, it is a dream, The Thursday Murder Club in such incredible hands,” Osman said at the time. “From Chris Columbus to Amblin to Netflix, everywhere I look there are geniuses. And what a cast. I’m pinching myself.”
What is the expected release date of The Thursday Murder Club?
It is unclear when the film will be released, but in April 2024, Osman confirmed that filming would take place “this summer from late June to September, all in England.” He also revealed Chris Columbus, who would direct Home alone and the first two Harry Potter Films and Mrs Doubtfire, will write and direct.
Does that mean a release date in 2025? We assume so.
