Thunderstorms likely in southeast Michigan Tuesday morning

Storms forming south of Minneapolis could move toward southeast Michigan early Tuesday morning.

High pressure will keep Monday night dry, but the warm front will be followed by thunderstorms. By 4 a.m., the thunderstorms will hover over Lake Michigan and by 9 a.m., they will pass over southeast Michigan.

Showers and thunderstorms are likely — with the possibility of wind gusts over 60 mph, heavy hail and localized flooding, according to the National Weather Service in White Lake. There is a “slight risk of thunderstorms reaching severe intensity.”

Temperatures will reach a high of 31 degrees on Tuesday afternoon.

Further strong to severe thunderstorms are possible during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday.

“The greatest risk is along and south of I-94, with damaging winds being the primary hazard,” the NWS weather forecast said.

Beachgoers on Lake Michigan are advised not to go into the water on Tuesday because of the storms, the NWS in Grand Rapids said on X. This applies to all beaches in West Michigan.

The storm could produce dangerous waves and currents from early Tuesday morning into the afternoon.

According to the NWS, warnings for small boats also apply for Tuesday:

  • From Saginaw Bay to Port Huron – from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Lake St. Clair and the Michigan Waters of Lake Erie – 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The next wave of possible storms is expected for Saturday.
