SLED files charges against woman following death of three-year-old in 2020

EDGEFIELD, SC (WJBF) – South Carolina law enforcement charged a woman with unlawful endangerment of a child in 2020 after a 3-year-old died in Edgefield County.

Codi Raye Scott (Carter), 27, was charged with two counts of endangering a child on Friday, June 21. Scott (Carter) was booked into the Edgefield County Detention Center.


A SLED report indicates that officials were notified of the three-year-old’s death on October 13, 2020. The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office requested SLED’s assistance in investigating the case on January 17, 2023.

An arrest warrant indicates that officers held Scott (Carter) responsible for the child’s welfare between July 28, 2020 and October 12, 2020. The warrant documented signs of injury to the child.

The other arrest warrant stated that on October 13, 2020, Scott (Carter) “…whether alone or in concert with another person, placed or placed an unsafe mouthpiece into the victim’s mouth, resulting in upper airway obstruction and causing the death of the minor victim.”

The case is to be tried by the District Attorney’s Office of the 11th Judicial District.
