Will Smith will present a new song at the BET Awards

The “Fresh Prince” to debut new music at the 2024 BET Awards.

Four-time Grammy winner Will Smith will perform a new original song at the annual awards ceremony on Sunday, June 30, BET announced in a June 24 press release.

The Oscar winner devoted himself to music before becoming known as an actor in the 1990s through the TV series “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” Smith rapped the sitcom’s famous theme song.

The “Aladdin” actor has already released a new single, “Light Em Up,” with Sean Paul for the new film “Bad Boys: Ride Or Die,” in which Smith plays the lead role. He first rose to music fame as part of a duo with DJ Jazzy Jeffwho also appeared with him in “Fresh Prince”.

Connie Orlando, BET’s executive vice president of specials, music programming and music strategy, called Smith a “global icon” in the press release.

“It is an honor to welcome him back to the BET Awards stage,” she said. We look forward to Will contributing to another defining evening for culture that is not to be missed.”

The show is described as “culture’s biggest night” and also includes performances by Victoria Monet, Lauryn HillGloRilla, Tyla and Shaboozey.

Smith has recently returned to his hip-hop roots. In April, he surprised attendees at Coachella when he took the stage with singer J Balvin to sing his 1997 song “Men In Black,” which is also from a film series in which Smith plays the lead role.

In December, he performed with DJ Jazzy Jeff at “A Grammy Salute to 50 Years of Hip-Hop.”

“Jeff and I had to dig out the old chains and jerseys for this race, ha,” Smith said in the description of his YouTube post at the time.

He also said, “Sharing the stage to celebrate 50 years of hip-hop with some of music’s biggest icons was AWESOME!”

“Definitely a moment I will never forget,” he added.
