Will Smith will perform a new song at the BET Awards two months after his surprise appearance at Coachella… and thus recover from the Oscar slap

Will Smith will present new music in his first major solo performance since the infamous Oscar slap.

After his surprise appearance at the Coachella Festival, the 55-year-old “Bad Boys” star will take the stage with his own song at the BET Awards this Sunday, according to Deadline.

“From his early days as a rapper to ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ to box office success as one of the Bad Boys, Will Smith is truly a global icon and we are honored to welcome him back to the BET Awards stage,” said Connie Orlando, EVP Specials, Music Programming & Music Strategy at BET, in a statement.

“We look forward to Will contributing to another defining evening for culture that is not to be missed.”

Details of Smith’s performance remain under wraps, but sources reveal that he is currently working on a new album, the outlet said.

Smith released his last solo single in 2017 and his last album Lost And Found in 2005.

Taraji P. Henson returns to host the BET Awards, where Grammy winner Usher will be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

The event will also feature performances by Ice Spice, Sexyy Red, Latto, Lauryn Hill & YG Marley, Tyla, GloRilla, Muni Long, Shaboozey and Victoria Monét.

In addition, performances by Cardi B, Davido, Gunna, the Roots, Common, Queen Latifah and the Jungle Brothers are expected.

Drake is the leading candidate with seven nominations.

The BET appearance follows Smith’s cameo with J. Balvin in April at Coachella, where he wore full Men in Black gear for Balvin’s UFO set.

In May, Smith hinted that he had been working on a new project for a year and a half.

He told ET at the time that it was “without question the most personal and powerful music I’ve ever made.”

Smith made headlines at another awards ceremony a few years ago when he slapped comedian Chris Rock at the 94th Academy Awards on March 27, 2022.

The incident occurred after Rock made a joke about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

This prompted Will to go on stage, slap Rock and say, “Take my wife’s name out of your damn mouth.”

Jada meanwhile published a memoir last year, which revealed that she has been separated from her husband for seven years.
