Charli XCX reportedly condemns fans who insulted Taylor Swift at a concert: “That bothers me”

Charli XCX defended Taylor Swift after fans allegedly insulted the pop superstar at a recent concert.

The British pop singer, who opened for Swift on the 2018 Reputation Stadium Tour, was reportedly reacting to footage from her concert on Saturday in São Paulo, Brazil, in which fans could be heard chanting “A Taylor Morreu,” which loosely translates to “Taylor is dead.” Fans also chanted the same message at a release party for Charli’s latest album, “Brat,” on June 7, X-user @ritsuppy claims in the video.

“Hey @charli_xcx your Brazilian fans have been exhibiting toxic behavior at your concerts and events related to you by yelling ‘Taylor is dead!'” the X user wrote. “Could you do something about it? We don’t think that’s what music should be about.”

The “Von Dutch” singer commented on the video in her Instagram story on Sunday and condemned fans for the derogatory remark about Swift.

“Can the people who do this please stop? Online or at my shows,” Charli wrote in the now-expired post, according to Deadline and Today.com. “It’s the opposite of what I want and it bothers me that anyone thinks there’s a place for it in this community. I will not tolerate it.”

Charli’s comments follow recent speculation about a falling out between her and Swift in pop music. Earlier this month, Swift released deluxe editions of her album “The Tortured Poets Department” in the UK, which some fans saw as a business tactic to prevent Charli’s album “Brat” from taking the top spot on the UK album charts away from Swift.

This isn’t the first time Charli has expressed her support for Swift.

Charli XCX says she is “extremely grateful” to be opening for Taylor Swift’s concert tour

In August 2019, Charli reflected on her tour with Swift as the opening act for the Reputation Stadium Tour in an interview with Pitchfork.

“I’m really grateful that (Taylor) invited me on this tour,” Charli told the broadcaster at the time. “But as an artist, it kind of felt like I was walking up on stage and waving to 5-year-olds.”

The “Boom Clap” singer later took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to clarify her comments after claiming “people online took something I said out of context.”

“As I say in the article and have said many times before, I am extremely grateful to Taylor for inviting me to open for her,” Charli wrote. “She is one of the biggest artists of my generation and the Reputation tour was one of the biggest tours in history.”

Charli added that the “weird phrase” that caused controversy was part of a larger discussion about her difficulties in getting used to opening her shows at 6pm, even though she usually performs late at night.

“Before this tour, I had played a lot of 18+ club shows, so being on stage in front of people of all ages was new to me and I approached my performances with a whole new kind of energy,” she wrote.
