Traditional Michigan State football recruit explains why he chose Michigan

Sunday was an interesting day for Michigan State football fans.

No, there was no breaking news about anyone on the roster, nor were the Spartans able to sign anyone, but what made headlines was who they couldn’t sign.

Kaden Strayhorn, son of former MSU player and Spartan football radio host Jason Strayhorn, has committed to Michigan. That’s right, a Michigan State recruit chose the Wolverines over the Spartans, and National Signing Day is about six months away. So it’s not like he had to rush into this decision, but he did.

And he hadn’t even planned an official visit to the state of Michigan.

This happened just weeks after Jaden Mangham transferred from Michigan State to Michigan and Strayhorn appeared on his podcast to talk about how unacceptable that was.

So why didn’t he choose the Spartans? Apparently, after an introductory interview, the new hires didn’t stay in touch with Kaden throughout the recruiting process and he said the Spartans were “afraid” of competing with his other offers.

To me, that’s just a wild claim that makes it sound like the three-star offensive lineman from IMG Academy is a little pissed that his father’s alma mater didn’t recruit him. If he had been heavily recruited by Michigan State, he probably would have chosen the Spartans. But instead, he went to their rival – something nobody expected early in the selection process.

Maybe the Strayhorns had a better relationship with Mel Tucker (they did), but to say that Jonathan Smith and the Spartans were “afraid” of his other offers when they were recruiting against those schools in the portal all season is idiotic.

But the rivalry is becoming more and more interesting.
