In the war with Russia, Volodymyr Selenskyj dismisses a high-ranking commander of the Ukrainian army

Kyiv:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Monday replaced a senior army officer who commanded troops in the country’s embattled east after he was accused of incompetence and abuse of power during the Russian invasion.

This move came as Kyiv has been struggling for months – almost two and a half years after the war began – to keep Moscow’s forces in the east at bay.

“I have decided to replace the commander of the United Armed Forces of Ukraine, Lieutenant General Yuriy Sodol, with Brigadier General Andriy Gnatov,” Zelensky said in his daily evening address.

He did not give details about the reasons for his dismissal, but the decision came after criticism from a commander of the Azov Brigade, which is known for its links to the extreme right.

The commander of the Azov base, Bogdan Krotevych, had filed a complaint with the security service SBU a day earlier and demanded an investigation against Sodol.

According to media reports, Krotevych accused Sodol of incompetence and blamed him for the deaths of Ukrainian soldiers at the front.

Ukraine is outnumbered and outweighed by Russia and has been on the defensive for months. Almost every week, Moscow’s forces capture new villages in the east, but without making a major breakthrough.
