Charli XCX asks her fans to stop chanting “Taylor Swift is dead” at concerts

  • Charli XCX issued a warning on Instagram on Sunday after learning that some had made Taylor Swift the target of a hate campaign
  • She condemned those who recently led “Taylor Swift is dead” chants at her concerts
  • The brat Comments from the singer follow after a performance in Brazil on June 22

Charli XCX has a zero-tolerance policy towards negativity – especially towards anyone who hates Taylor Swift.

On Sunday, June 23, the 31-year-old “360” singer took a moment to address a portion of her fanbase who have recently made the 34-year-old “Fortnight” pop star the target of a hate campaign, with some criticizing her online and even leading “Taylor Swift is dead” chants at the singer’s concerts.

“Can people who do this please stop. Online or at my shows,” Charli wrote in an Instagram story that included a screenshot of a video from an X user (formerly Twitter) alerting her to the rude chants.

“It’s the opposite of what I want, and it bothers me that anyone thinks there’s room for it in this community,” she added. “I will not tolerate it.”

The original video, which mentioned Charli and her fans’ “toxic behavior,” was posted after the singer’s June 22 performance in São Paulo, Brazil. The caption reads, “Hey @charli_xcx your Brazilian fans have been exhibiting toxic behavior at your concerts and events related to you by yelling ‘Taylor is dead!’ Could you do something about it? We don’t believe music should be about that. @taylornation13 please take note of that too.”

The chants and posts began after fans mistakenly assumed that Charli’s song “Sympathy Is a Knife” was about her insecurities around Swift. Charli had previously opened for Camila Cabello on Swift’s 1989 stadium tour.

The day after her performance, Charli wrote a heartfelt message on Instagram to her fans who attended her shows in Brazil and Mexico over the past week: “To all the angels I met at CDMX and São Paulo: Thank you for being so kind and sweet!!!”

“Your energy at these shows was truly unmatched and I’m sooo happy I got to DJ your version of The Girl, So Confused for the first time in my life while partying with you,” she continued, referring to the remix she released with Lorde on Friday, June 21. “Emotional moment Fr., seriously – I love you all forever and you are so Julia <3."

Charli’s defense of Swift follows the release of “girl, so confused version with lorde,” on which the “Von Dutch” musician also opens up about her complicated friendship with pop star Lorde (27). The vulnerable remix reveals the two’s feelings for each other after fans speculated that the original track – which appears on Charli’s latest album – brat – was addressed to the “Royals” artist.

“Yeah, I don’t know if you like me / Sometimes I think you might hate me / Sometimes I think I might hate you / Maybe you just wanna be me,” Charli sings in the original and remixed songs. Lorde’s verse then responds with lyrics like, “Well, honestly I was speechless / When I woke up to your voicemail / You told me how you felt / Let’s work it out in the remix.”

Following the release of Charli’s brat — which was released on June 7 — Lorde celebrated the LP in an Instagram story, saying, “Charli just did this differently.” She added, “So much guts, grace, and commitment. I speak for all of us when I say it’s an honor to be moved, changed, and silenced by her work. There is NO ONE like this beast.”
