Original “Defe Defe” singer Mabel Tiwaa Rockson breaks her silence in copyright dispute

He intends to pursue the matter further as he believes they sampled parts of a song he produced in the past.

In an interview with Kumasi-based station Hello FM, Mabel Tiwaa Rockson of Hallelujah Voices spoke out on the issue for the first time, saying she was not happy with Team Eternity’s approach.

“I heard my kids singing the song and thought they had made it up. But it turned out a group had sung it. I wanted to do a remix but had to wait because their song was already out there and selling so well.

“Later, Kwame Mickey came forward and said he had attacked Team Eternity on social media and if he had told us, we would have advised him to leave it to God but he chose a different approach.

“So they called my husband and told him that we were Christians and we should handle it as Christians, not like those who sing hiplife. I was insulted when my husband told me what they had said.” she said in the interview.

The song “Defe Defe” sung by Hallelujah Voices was written by Osuani Afrifa and produced by Kwame Mickey for Kaakyire Music Productions and was released in 2004.

The recent copyright issue has sparked a huge debate. While some argue that Team Eternity’s “Defe Defe” is different from the Hallelujah Voices song, others claim that the mere fact that two lines are literally the same constitutes copyright infringement.
