Several injured after boating accident on Lake Michigan, Wisconsin DNR launches investigation

RACINE, Wis. (WFRV) – Authorities in southern Wisconsin are investigating a serious boating accident that occurred around 9 p.m. on Lake Michigan, east of Reefpoint Marina.

According to the Racine County Sheriff’s Office, two boats were involved in the collision and several people were in the water with injuries.

There were three people on the first boat and eleven on the second. There were also teenagers on both boats. All boaters have been accounted for, several people have been taken to local hospitals, and one teenager is in Froedtert Hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Initial investigations have shown that one of the boats was traveling at a higher speed when it collided with the second boat, the press release said.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved in this unfortunate incident and we hope they all recover quickly,” said Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling. “I commend the emergency responders who immediately responded to this critical situation and provided medical assistance.”

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is leading the investigation. Further details are not available at this time.
