Incognito brings the funk to Chaka Khan’s Meltdown Festival

It is always a joyful occasion when I have the opportunity to see one of my favorite bands, Incognito, perform. writes Eva London.

Thursday 19th July was a very special night as Incognito, one of England’s oldest bands, celebrated their 45th anniversary.th Anniversary.

Incognito played to a home crowd as part of the Meltdown Festival at London’s Southbank Centre. As one of the standout acts at the festival curated by the legendary Chaka Khan, expectations were high and they were not disappointed.

As soon as Incognito entered the stage, the band created a great atmosphere and a fantastic evening with their mix of soul, funk and acid jazz. The interplay between keyboard, rhythm and brass was truly spectacular.

Incognito featured a number of fan favorites, including Don’t worry about anything, Always there, Deep water, Still a friend of mine and many others.

The display of individual talents, the mix of genres and the ability to capture the audience’s attention was a master class in live music.

The combination of older and newer songs, including the latest track Into youwas performed. It was characterized by lush instrumentation and soulful singing.

This opening track of the latest album entitled Into youis a fantastic addition to Incognito’s discography and shows the band’s continuous evolution – definitely a must-listen!

Incognito’s frontman and founder Jean-Paul “Bluey” Maunick gave the audience a history lesson that showed just how long the group has been around. Bluey’s charisma and storytelling ability highlighted the importance of music and togetherness, which are absolutely necessary in today’s climate.

During the show, Incognito’s long-time collaborator Maysa Leak took the stage and reminded everyone of her passionate and versatile performance. Other standout singers included Tony Momrelle, Natalie Duncan and Cherri Voncelle, all gracing the stage with their distinct styles.

The band’s bass guitarist Francis Hylton showed why he is considered one of the best bassists in the world. It’s always a joy to see Francis rocking out on an instrument that gives the band a rich and full sound.

Overall, Incognito’s performance at the Chaka Khan Meltdown Festival was an incredible evening. The display of individual talent, the mix of different genres and the ability to hold the audience’s attention was a masterclass in live music.

For this reason, Incognito remains an influential force in the music world.
